Commercialization of MLCC using nickel internal electrodes

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. commercialized multi-layer ceramic capacitors (Ni MLCC) using nickel internal electrodes, contributing to the development of the industry. As a result, Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. was awarded the International Society for Electrical and Electronics (IEEE), The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. awarded the IEEE Milestone Award.

The IEEE Milestone Award was established in 1983 as a system aimed at recognizing the historic achievements of breakthrough innovations in the field of electrical and electronics, which have been developed for over 25 years and have made significant contributions to social and industrial development.

In 1966, When MLCC was first used as a product, its application range was limited due to the use of expensive precious metals in the internal electrodes, which had a high unit price. In order to replace precious metals with cheaper metals, there is a technical challenge that needs to be solved: to avoid metal oxidation, it is necessary to develop dielectric ceramic materials that can be sintered at low oxygen concentrations.

Therefore, Murata Manufacturing Company used inexpensive nickel metal while developing dielectric ceramic materials. In 1973, they began developing Ni-MLCC, which combines high quality and low price. It took about 8 years to implement the material and construct the production process, and began mass production of Ni-MLCC in 1982.Murata MLCC(GRM).

Nowadays, as an indispensable product in electronic products, in addition to communication equipment, it is also widely used in markets such as automobiles, household appliances, industrial equipment, medical equipment, etc., making contributions to industrial development. Murata Manufacturing strives to achieve miniaturization, increase electrostatic capacity density, and reduce production costs according to different uses, and supplies over 1 trillion Ni MLCC to global customers every year.

Characteristics of Ni MLCC

Firstly, Ni MLCC has excellent high-frequency characteristics and high-density installation.

In addition to its excellent frequency characteristics suitable for high-speed IC power circuits and high-frequency RF circuits, its small size, high capacitance density, and surface mounting capability can contribute to the high integration and improved communication speed of information terminals such as mobile phones.

Secondly, Ni MLCC has high voltage resistance and reliability.

Having excellent voltage resistance and reliability required in the field of power electronics, Ni MLCC is widely used in various power circuits centered around automotive electronics.

On the occasion of this award, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders for your strong support in winning this award. In the future, our company will continue to promote innovation that can provide new value, provide industry-leading innovative products and technologies, support people's lives, and continuously move forward with the goal of continuously improving enterprise value.
